Meateaters.co.nz is dedicated to people who love cooking meat. We welcome you! Find how and where to buy meat, and how to cook it. We’ll bring you the best meat recipes, as well as classic meat dishes, from casseroles to steak to stews to roast dinners.
There’s a lot of controversy and debate over the benefits (or not) of eating meat. Moderation is the key. Only cook what you need, don’t overeat (unless it’s pork spare ribs) and choose your meat wisely, preferably grass fed, free roaming livestock.
This site comes to you from New Zealand. We developed our entire economy on the back of growing and exporting meat so we know what we’re talking about.
If you have ideas for articles, or you have reviews of great meat meals you have experienced, or you want to talk about your favourite butcher, or meat retailer then add a comment to this post (or any other for that matter) and we’ll make contact with you via the email address you provide.
Or send your recipes and ideas to recipes@meateaters.co.nz.
I hope you enjoy your time at Meateaters. You can also find us at meatdinner.com

Hi there Alois – sorry for the delay in replying. I don’t have any contacts for Homekill services in Howick. I did a Google for you and the closest may be in Ramarama:
Mr Butcher Homekills

Ramarama 2579

Give them a call and see if they can help you.
Thanks for visiting.

Dear Dr Meateater
Can you recommend somewhere in Wellington I can get a Christmas ham? The mantle has come down the generations to my shoulders, and this year I must provide a ham that will impress the in-laws.
Thanks in advance
Carl
Hi Carl,
Thanks for your question. If you are who I think you are the best place to buy your Christmas ham would be Khandallah butchery (Village Quality Meats) in the Khandallah village.
I have bought the Christmas ham there on several occasions, but you need to book it now otherwise he’ll sell out.
The other great butcher within driving distance is Gipps Street Butcher in Karori.
Depending on how many you are wanting to feed maybe a half ham will suffice.
I’ll post a glaze recipe in the next week in preparation for your purchase, as well as some lessons on how to carve your ham and care for it over the week or so it will take to eat.
Visit again, and remember to tell your friends about Meateaters.co.nz.
Cheers
Alan
Hiya, Have just discovered your website!!! My husband and I are beef and sheep farmers in the Waikato region. Last year we begun a business selling our homegrown Angus beef and prime lamb at farmers markets in the Auckland region (Clevedon Farmers Market and Pine Harbour Fresh Market) and online. I would be interested in finding our more regarding marketing our product on your website. We have built up a very loyal customer base in the short time we have been operating. Our point of difference is that we are SO sure of providing a quality product that we offer the buyer a 100% guarnatee – satisfication or your money back!! Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Carolyn Eyre
Hi Carolyn,
Are you still selling your meat in the waikato Area? I am from Hamilton and am looking to buy bulk meat (just for family) but throughout the year. Where can we find your products? Thanks, Rebecca
Hi Alan
I asked Gordon about recipes the other day (he being one of the better cooks I know) and he suggested your site. We’ve just installed a wonderful new kitchen so we’re keen to spend more time there and expand our cooking horizons.
Looking forward to trying new dishes.
Cheers
Carl Beentjes
Good luck with the kitchen Carl – there are lots of good meat recipes here, most of which I have cooked myself. One of Gordon’s favourites is the Pork and Fino Sherry recipe. My good friend Pete cooked it and said it was absolutely delicious (he provided the photos).
You can find that recipe here: http://www.meateaters.co.nz/pork/pot-roasted-pork-loin-with-bay-leaves-and-fino-sherry/
If you have any good meat recipes then I’m happy to publish them here with or without photos.
Thanks for visiting!

Hi Alan,
love this site, as an ex-vegetarian who returned to the carnivorous fold it tickles my fancy. Especially liked the articles on home killed livestock. My sister who lives in far north has enough space for some Welsh cattle who are dispatched by a guy who sounds amazing, and the meat tastes damn fine.
Cheers from Earls Court,
Viv
Hey Viv – great to hear from you and welcome back to the fold 🙂 How did you find the site? Linda says hi BTW. Plus I inadvertently ignored a FB request from you – now I can’t find you so ask me again. Cheers, Alan
Hi Alan,
next time you are in Chch check out Mariano’s chorizo. You may even know his wife Mary or her sister Sarah Davison.
Cheers,
Viv
