Bakels have been running the Supreme Pie Award or 13 years and the standard continues to rise.
In 2008 the unheard of actually happened and a vegetarian pie took top honours. We’re not going to say anything more on that, this being a site about meat and all!
The winner this year was Goldstar Patrick’s Pies Bakery & Café in Tauranga. They won for their creamy bacon, mushroom and cheese pie. It’s the third time that the bakery has taken the Supreme Award – they won in 2003 with a mince and cheese pie, and again in 2004 with another creamy bacon, mushroom and cheese pie.
Owner Pat Lam also won the Gold Award in the chicken and vegetable, bacon and egg and seafood categories. And he took a Highly Commended in the vegetarian category.
A record 388 bakeries entered this year’s competition, 100 more than last year. 60 percent were Asian and Asian bakeries won nearly 50 percent of the awards.
My particular favourite bakery is the Elite Bakery & Café at 175 Victoria Street, Wellington. They have won many pie awards, this year taking a silver for the Steak and Cheese. My personal favourite at Elite is their Steak and Mushroom.
